This past weekend the Dawgs took a trip to the University of Dayton to play the first regional tournament of the semester. The first game was against Dayton B where the Dawgs came out on top 47-30 in a very strong defensive game. The next day the Dawgs faced off against  the tournament champion, Dayton A, and were victorious again in a strong win 52-43. The first round of the tournament lead to a surprising early exit against Marquette 48-32. Dawgs Rally Late to Overcome a Tough Bradley Squad!

On Saturday, November 9th, Parents’ Weekend kicked off with festivities all over campus! While parents and students gathered in the Hinkle parking lot to tailgate, the Butler Club Basketball Team faced off against a very experienced Bradley University squad. The Dawgs battled through the first half to find themselves with a  half time lead of 43-36. Matt Troja, a senior and captain for the Butler team, kicked off the second half with back-to-back three-pointers to push the lead to 13. Although the Bradley squad answered with a few three’s of their own, Butler rallied at the 12-minute mark to find 3 steals and 12 fast-break points from the freshman duo, Trey Pettus and Bernard McFarland.

With 11 mintues left in the second half, Butler turned to their inside presence with Jim Herrick and Lavell Dean. While Bradley chained several quick opportunities, Herrick and Dean combined for 14 points in a 4-minute span to increase the Dawgs lead to 15.  Bradley responded in turn with several three-pointers in the closing minutes, but another round of fast-break points and mid-range jumpshots by Nick Donati kept the Butler team well ahead of Bradley as the game closed and Butler held on to an impressive 88-77 final score.

The Dawgs are now 5-1 on the year and will announce their next games in the coming weeks. We would also like to add a special thanks to all the families and friends that watched our game against Bradley! Stay tuned for more updates!

Butler Wins IU Club Basketball Tournament 2013

The Butler Men’s Club Basketball team improved its season record to 21-1 with an impressive championship in Bloomington, IN.  The team travelled down to the Indiana University campus on February 2nd and 3rd and came out with a 7-0 record.  In pool play the Bulldogs beat Lewis College, Ohio State University and Indiana University.  Butler opened bracket play with a victory over Dayton 2.  This led to a matchup with Ivy Tech-Lafayette, a team Butler has struggled with in the past.  After losing four times to Ivy Tech last season, Carl Miller helped BU to a convincing victory, setting up a semifinal matchup with Dayton 1, which Butler won running away.  In the championship, Butler faced another familiar foe in Central Michigan University.  Thanks to the post play of Matt Vogt and James Pascascio, the Bulldogs were able to come out champions of their third tournament this season.

Butler will face Ivy Tech University-Lafayette this Saturday, February 9th at the HRC.
