FAQ

What are Club Callouts?
Club Callouts are meetings that most clubs conduct at the beginning of each semester to promote the club to campus as well as share important information as to how the club is organized and ran from an administrative standpoint.

Do I have to attend the Club Callout to be eligible to participate on the team?
No, however it is extremely helpful in getting to know the veteran club members and learn the club schedules for the semester. If you miss the Callout meeting or if your club doesn’t have one listed, you can either contact the club president or contact the Assistant Director of Club Sports.

What is a club sport?
A sport club is a registered student organization (with Pulse) formed by individuals with a common interest in a sport activity that exists to promote and develop interest in that particular activity. Clubs may be instructional, recreational, competitive, or some combination thereof. Characterized by being student-initiated and student-managed, the basic structure of sport clubs allows members numerous opportunities for leadership and decision-making. The actual success and strength of the club is dependent on effective leadership of the officers & the degree of involvement of club members. Participation in a sport club is voluntary.

How do I find out where a club meets to practice or work out?
Please see the individual club sites/blogs for more info.

Do clubs charge membership dues to join?
Yes, the majority of clubs charge dues to join. Most clubs do receive limited funding from SGA, but this funding does not cover all of the expenses incurred. Dues payments help defray the cost of travel, equipment and other expenses. Dues range from $0 per semester to $800 per academic year.

How does a registered student organization become a sport club?
First you must be a recognized student organization with Pulse. Start a new student organization.
Already a recognized student organization? Contact the CSC for more information on the club sports recognition process.

Do sport clubs conduct tryouts?
Some of the team sports have tryouts. Most do not have tryouts. All sport clubs are encouraged to have multiple teams to alleviate the need for tryouts, but it is simply not possible in some cases due to limited space and equipment.

What is the level of competition?
Varies substantially from no competition (instructional & recreational only) to highly competitive. For example, the Karate Club has an instructional & recreational base with very little, if any, competition. Some individual & team sport clubs are newer with less organized leagues that offer competition that is not as highly developed. Other individual & team sport clubs are members of prestigious & highly organized regional or national conferences and travel extensively throughout the Midwest competing at a high level comparable to NCAA Division III.

Do I need experience in order to participate?
Varies, but most clubs encourage students without experience to come out and learn their sport or activity.

How do I get involved in a club sport?
Contact the club sport you are interested in through the links on our homepage. The Pulse also conducts “block party” where all the student organizations, including club sports, showcase their involvement on and off campus.
